"14th of September, 2025: Greifswald showcases its historic landmarks"

On September 14, 2025, the city of Greifswald will open its doors for a unique event - the "Day of Open Monuments". This day is an opportunity for visitors to delve into the city's rich history, culture, and architecture.

The day kicks off with a city tour focused on women in Greifswald's history and cityscape, starting at 10:00 AM from Greifswald-Information. For those interested in architecture, Historian André Lutze will give a lecture titled "775 Years of Greifswald: Buildings from the Founding Century in the Old Town" at 10:00 AM in the Town Hall. Following the lecture, a guided walk through the Old Town will take place at 12:30 PM, also meeting at the Town Hall.

At 2:00 PM, a tour about Frieda Stundl-Pietschmann, who influenced the knotting of the Pomeranian fisherman's carpets, will take place. The meeting point is the Town Hall. Visitors can also explore the interior of the Eldena windmill during this time.

From 2:00 to 6:00 PM, the Hofcafé will be open in the Soziokulturelles Zentrum St. Spiritus for linocut postcard printing. The exhibition "Said-Done" about Pomeranian legends can be visited from 2:00 PM, and two readings will be offered in the afternoon.

For those with a passion for ships, historic ships can be seen at the Museum Harbour. The University of Greifswald's Old University Library and the Historic Greenhouses of the Botanical Garden will be open for guided tours. A lecture on historical gypsum fragments from the collection of the Kustodie will take place in the Council Hall.

Lutze will also lead a walk through the park of the Eldena monastery ruins at 6:00 PM, discussing the architectural development up to the founding of Greifswald in 1250.

Numerous historic buildings and facilities will open their doors for the day. The Pomeranian State Museum, Caspar-David-Friedrich Center, churches of St. Nikolai, St. Marien, and St. Jacobi, and the Kultur- und Initiativenhaus STRAZE will participate with various events.

The University of Greifswald, the State Office for Culture and Monument Protection Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, the State Construction and Property Office Greifswald, the Ministry for Science, Culture, Federal and European Affairs Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, and local citizen initiatives such as the UHGW (likely the local heritage association) also contribute exhibitions and activities for the "Day of Open Monuments".

The theme of the event is "WERT-Voll", encouraging discovery, learning, and creativity. Don't miss this chance to immerse yourself in Greifswald's history and culture!
