A blazing fireball illuminated the Japanese skies, shining just as intensely as the moon.

In an unexpected spectacle, a magnificent fireball lit up the night skies over western Japan on Tuesday, shortly after 23:00 local time. The dazzling event left residents and stargazers in awe, as the light was as bright as the Moon and even caused some to feel the air vibrate.

Toshihisa Maeda, the director of the Sendai Space Museum in Satsumasendai City, Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan, identified the fireball as a bolide – an extremely bright meteor. According to Maeda, the bolide likely ended its journey by sinking into the Pacific Ocean.

A driver named Yoshihiko Hamahata in Miyazaki prefecture witnessed the fireball as a "white light" that was bright enough to clearly see surrounding houses. Hamahata described the light as resembling sunlight and was surprised by the event.

Reports of the fireball have been widespread, with users on the internet posting videos and photos of the spectacle. NASA confirms that objects causing such fireball phenomena can be over a meter in size.
