A well-known actor from the series "Großstadttrevier" passed away in Munich
Arthur Brauss, a beloved figure in German television entertainment, has passed away at the age of 89 in his Munich apartment. His wife, Marie Pocolin-Brauss, confirmed his death to the German Press Agency (dpa).
Brauss was a native of Augsburg and began his acting career via an unconventional route. Before delving into the world of theatre, he was a track and field athlete, becoming the German youth champion in pole vaulting. His passion for athletics led him to the University of Wyoming, where he studied mathematics and economics and gained his first stage experience.
His professional acting career spanned over five decades, with more than 100 productions to his credit. He made his acting debut in 1963 in the film "Delay in Marienborn" about the German division and the Cold War. Brauss's diverse roles included appearances in "The Old Fox", "Munich Stories", "Police Emergency 110", "The Black Forest Clinic", "Derrick" and "Commissario Laurenti".
Arthur Brauss was a public favourite for his role as police officer Richard Block in "Tatort", which aired from 1986 to 1991. However, his most prominent and widely recognized role during that period was as Police Chief Inspector Richard Block in the ARD series "Großstadtrevier", not in Tatort itself. In Tatort, he appeared in multiple episodes but not as a recurring main character.
Brauss also acted in films like "The Train" in 1964 and Wim Wenders' film "The Goalkeeper's Fear of the Penalty" in 1972. His career in television was marked by his quiet yet impactful performances, earning him the title of a quiet star of German television entertainment.
In recent years, Brauss had largely withdrawn from television and the public eye. He died peacefully in his Munich apartment, with his wife present. His wife confirmed his burial location in Munich. The couple had been together for 50 years and married last year.
Brauss was very weak and needed round-the-clock care, as his wife stated. The news of his passing has been met with great sadness by fans and colleagues alike, who will remember him for his dedication to his craft and the memorable characters he brought to life on screen.
