Accident at Elevator de Gloria deeply regretted by Marcelo, seeking explanations
In a tragic turn of events, an accident involving the Elevador da Glória, a funicular railway in Lisbon, has resulted in multiple casualties and injuries. The incident occurred on Wednesday at 18:05, at the Calçada da Glória in Lisbon, Portugal.
According to reports, more than three people have lost their lives in the incident. Two of the seriously injured individuals are currently in critical condition. Alongside these tragic fatalities, five individuals were seriously injured, and a significant number of others sustained lighter injuries.
President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa has expressed his deep regret and concern over the incident. In a statement, he expressed his sympathy for the victims and their families, and emphasised the importance of ensuring the safety of such public transport systems.
The Lisbon City Council and the company operating the Elevador da Glória are now responsible for overseeing and investigating the causes of the accident. They are supported by 22 vehicles in the response efforts, with a total of 62 operatives assisting the victims.
The INEM's Catastrophe Intervention Vehicle has also been activated to provide additional aid. The Elevador da Glória derailed and overturned, striking a building, in the incident.
