Acquiring Dutch biomethane power plant bolsters ReFuels' sustainable energy infrastructure
ReFuels, a European leader in renewable biomethane (Bio-CNG) supply, has announced the acquisition of Bio Energie Holwerd, a biomethane production facility in the Netherlands. The acquisition was made through Renewable Transport Fuel Services (RTFS), a subsidiary of CNG Fuels in which ReFuels owns a 40% interest.
The acquisition of Bio Energie Holwerd, which started operations in 2014, will continue operations under the existing local management team. The facility produces 13 GWh of biomethane annually from waste, a significant contribution towards ReFuels' expected dispensation of close to 1 TWh of Bio-CNG during 2025.
Jasper Nillesen, Executive Director of ReFuels and CEO of RTFS, stated that the acquisition complements its refuelling position in the UK by providing increased optionality in upstream sourcing. He added that the company is building a future-proof platform to support Europe's transition away from diesel in the heavy transport sector.
The owner of Bio Energie Holwerd will now be ReFuels. RTFS will look to optimize the site over time, with plans to assess expansion in line with permit allowances, feedstock developments, and commercial priorities. The company aims to double its capacity to 20,000 HGVs per day by end-2028.
The biomethane produced at the facility is injected into the gas grid and qualifies for UK Renewable Transport Fuel Certificates (RTFCs). This acquisition enhances supply flexibility amid growing end-user demand for biomethane, as demand from fleet operators for biomethane HGVs continues to grow.
CNG Fuels' current station network serves over 2,000 HGVs in the UK. Biomethane HGVs have lower emissions and fuel costs than diesel-powered trucks, making them an attractive option for fleet operators looking to reduce their carbon footprint and lower operating costs.
Jasper Nillesen concluded by saying that the acquisition complements its refuelling position in the UK by providing increased optionality in upstream sourcing, further strengthening ReFuels' position as a European leader in renewable biomethane supply.
