Acquisition Announcement: Obtaining a Timepiece - Box Clock Manufactured by Friedrich Mauthe GmbH & Co.

In the heart of Ottawa, Ontario, a unique find was made at an antique shop in Cornwall, about four years ago. The author stumbled upon a box clock, a minimalist and utilitarian timepiece known for its clean lines and glazed elements.

This particular clock, however, has a distinctive feature - it strikes on three rods, setting it apart from the author's brother-in-law's four-rod striking clock. The three-rod strike produces a sound, albeit slightly different, from the richer and more sonorous four-rod strike.

The clock, missing its rod lock, runs and strikes, but it has two minor adjustment issues: a thuddy first hammer strike and a wobbling pendulum bob. Despite these minor hiccups, the clock continues to tick away, adding a rhythmic beat to its new home.

The clock's maker bears a resemblance to Mühle Glashütte, a renowned German maker of box clocks, known for their precision and mechanical craftsmanship. This similarity, coupled with the clock's glazed panel treatment with a Napoleon-hat-style curve in the center glass panel, suggests a possible German origin.

The early 1900s saw a shift from Vienna Regulators to box clocks, and it's intriguing to consider if this Ottawa find could be part of this transition. The clock's age, though not definitively known, is hinted at by its traditional design and the falling out of favour of Vienna Regulators during that period.
