Active travel enhancements unveiled in Rochdale and TfGM after public consultations
In an effort to deliver quicker, more reliable bus journeys and enhance walking and cycling routes, Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) and Rochdale Borough Council have announced new plans for the A627/A671 corridor. These improvements aim to strengthen communities and contribute to a thriving local economy.
The plans, part of the Greater Manchester Strategy to create a greener, fairer, and more connected region, focus on providing better connections to jobs, schools, shops, healthcare, and leisure. The Bee Network, as the initiative is called, will deliver on these ambitions.
One of the key features of the Bee Network is a new bus lane, upgraded bus stops with safer crossings for pedestrians, cyclists, and wheelchair users. A 'quiet route' for cyclists is also to be introduced, and raised junctions will be built to slow traffic, making walking easier.
The revised proposals for Rochdale are a significant part of building the Bee Network. TfGM's Director of Bus, Stephen Rhodes, emphasizes the importance of working with communities to shape the Bee Network. Previous feedback from consultations has led to retaining some parking outside local shops, removing the proposed right-turn lane at Oldham Road/Broad Lane, and making part of Platting Lane one-way.
Interestingly, the number of lanes for general traffic will remain the same. However, TfGM has not been specified to propose a lane rental scheme to cut disruption in the new plans.
The updated plans also include improvements around Oldham Road and nearby streets, with a focus on delivering more accessible, comfortable stops. These improvements are part of a wider plan to enhance travel along the A627/A671 corridor between Rochdale, Royton, Oldham, and Ashton.
The fourth annual CiTTi Awards, an unmissable event for the UK's transportation sector, will celebrate achievements and innovations in active travel on 25 November 2025 at De Vere Grand Connaught Rooms in London. The Bee Network's progress may very well be a contender for recognition at this prestigious event.
The revised plans for improving public transport and active travel in Rochdale were presented by Rochdale Borough Council, and the community is encouraged to continue engaging in the process to ensure the Bee Network meets the needs of the local residents.
