Active travel modifications are underway in Rochdale and TfGM, as confirmed post-public consultation.
Rochdale residents can look forward to enhanced travel options, as Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) and Rochdale Council have unveiled new plans to improve public transport and active travel. The proposals are a key part of building the Bee Network, an initiative aimed at creating a greener, fairer, and more connected city-region.
The plans include a number of significant improvements along the A627/A671 corridor. These include the introduction of a new bus lane, upgraded bus stops with safer crossings, and a 'quiet route' for cyclists. Part of Platting Lane will be made one-way to reduce rat-running, and raised junctions will be introduced to slow traffic and make walking easier.
The revised proposals for Rochdale reflect feedback received from earlier engagement on the scheme. One notable change is the removal of the proposed right-turn lane at Oldham Road/Broad Lane. The plans also retain some parking outside local shops to ensure accessibility for residents and businesses.
The Bee Network's implementation is expected to strengthen communities and contribute to a thriving local economy. The Director of Bus at TfGM, Stephen Rhodes, emphasizes the importance of working with communities to shape the Bee Network. He said, "We're committed to delivering quicker, more reliable bus journeys, better walking and cycling routes, and improved connections to jobs, schools, shops, healthcare, and leisure."
The improvements are not just limited to Rochdale. They are part of a wider plan to enhance travel along the A627/A671 corridor, contributing to the Greater Manchester Strategy's ambitions.
On 25 November 2025, the achievements and innovations in active travel will be recognised at the CiTTi Awards, held at De Vere Grand Connaught Rooms in London. The CiTTi Awards is an unmissable event for the UK's transportation sector, providing an opportunity to celebrate the strides made in promoting sustainable and accessible travel.
As the plans for Rochdale move forward, the focus remains on delivering better connections for all, fostering a more connected and vibrant city-region.
