The gaming world is abuzz with excitement as the Call of Duty movie, developed by Paramount, is set to join the ranks of Microsoft's growing lineup of game adaptations. With over 500 million total franchise sales and being the No. 1 best-selling video game franchise in the U.S. for 16 years, Call of Duty is one of the most influential games of all time.

Paramount has secured the rights to develop the movie, with Activision serving as a creative partner to ensure authenticity and capture the series' trademark action and storytelling. This collaboration is a passion project for David Ellison, Paramount's chairman and CEO, who is a longtime fan of the franchise.

The goal of the Call of Duty movie is to thrill longtime fans while also reaching new audiences. If handled well, it could become another blockbuster hit in Microsoft's portfolio, following in the footsteps of successful adaptations like Halo and Minecraft. Speaking of which, the Minecraft Movie has surpassed $900 million at the global box office.

Meanwhile, the second season of the Fallout TV series is set to premiere on December 17, 2025. Amazon's Fallout series has already crossed 100 million views on Prime Video, demonstrating the demand for high-quality gaming adaptations.

However, the road to the big screen for Call of Duty has not been without its hiccups. Activision attempted to take Call of Duty to the big screens in 2018 with director Stefano Sollima, but the project stalled. As of now, no director, cast, or release window has been announced for the Call of Duty movie.

Competition might be on the horizon for the Call of Duty movie, with Battlefield 6 releasing soon. Meanwhile, another Xbox franchise is pushing deeper into film and TV, as David Leitch is set to direct Netflix's Gears of War movie, with Jon Spaihts writing the script.

The Call of Duty movie is the latest property under Microsoft's gaming empire to head for the big screen, marking an exciting new chapter in the world of gaming adaptations. The movie is also one of the first significant projects since Paramount's $8 billion merger with Skydance Media. Stay tuned for more updates on this highly anticipated film.
