The controversy surrounding the film began with a marketing campaign for Sydney Sweeney's American Eagle ad, which escalated on social media.
In her Instagram Story, Halsey urged moviegoers not to take their anger out on the film, emphasizing that cinema should come first. She praised director Tony Tost for making an extraordinary film and emphasized that "Americana" is an important piece of cinema.
The controversy surrounding Sweeney's American Eagle campaign intensified when her voter registration showing her as a member of the Republican Party of Florida in Monroe County since June 2024 caused additional backlash and strengthened boycott calls against her new film. The ad itself was accused of promoting "Nazi propaganda" due to a pun between "genes" and "jeans."
Despite the boycott, Halsey has been vocal in her support for the film. She shared a poster for "Americana" on her Instagram Story and criticized the media for ripping apart the hardworking director and crew of the film unjustly, stating that the film is independent of the marketing campaign and has nothing to do with it.
"Americana" made approximately $500,000 at its nationwide debut and ranked 16th in the box office charts. The film had its world premiere at South by Southwest on March 17, 2023, and its premiere in Germany is planned for 2025, though the exact date and viewing platforms have not been specified yet.
