Actor Jude Law set to play Russian President Vladimir Putin in The Wizard of the Kremlin, screening at the Venice Film Festival
The film "The Wizard of the Kremlin," starring Jude Law as Vladimir Putin, is set to premiere during the ongoing three-year war in Ukraine. Directed by Olivier Assayas, known for his films like Clouds of Sils Maria, Personal Shopper, and Carlos, this will mark his English language debut.
The film is not a biopic or a direct adaptation of a specific book, unlike some other films with similar titles. Instead, it is a reflection on modern politics and the deceptive methods behind it. Paul Dano plays a fictional character named Vadim Baranov, a role inspired by the real political strategist Vladislav Surkov.
Alicia Vikander, who previously worked with Assayas in Irma Vep, co-stars in the film. The production partially took place in the early 1990s amid post-Soviet chaos and was shot in Latvia.
The Venice Film Festival will announce awards for acting and directing for the films in the main competition on Saturday. "The Wizard of the Kremlin" is competing in the main competition, alongside titles like Frankenstein, Bugonia, The Voice of Hind Rajab, La Grazia, and No Other Choice.
Brad Pitt and Joaquin Phoenix are joining as producers for a separate film titled "The Voice of Hind Rajab." However, the details of this film are not directly related to "The Wizard of the Kremlin."
Regrettably, efforts to stop the conflict with a ceasefire and end Europe's biggest conflict since the Second World War through a comprehensive peace settlement have made no progress. The ongoing war provides a grim backdrop to the premiere of "The Wizard of the Kremlin," underscoring the relevance and timeliness of the film's themes.
"The Wizard of the Kremlin" is not primarily a political film, but a film about politics and the perversity of its methods. It promises to be a thought-provoking addition to the Venice Film Festival lineup.
