Actor Reggie Miller refers to himself as the 'method actor' among the cast of 'Uncle Drew'
Reggie Miller, the Hall of Famer who spent his entire 18-year career with the Indiana Pacers, is set to make his first movie appearance in a role that's not a version of himself. In the upcoming film "Uncle Drew," Miller plays Lights, a septuagenarian basketball player whose prime was in 1968.
Despite the public flirtation with joining the New York Knicks during the summer of 1996, Miller admitted that he would not have made the move. The basketball player who was originally supposed to play for the Knicks but instead played for the Pacers and stated 22 years later that he did not join the team is Reggie Miller.
Miller's character, Lights, believes he was the "baddest shooter of all time" in his day. In the film, he receives a pair of Rec Specs that allow Miller to "channel his inner James Worthy." The transformation process for Lights was not an easy one, as Miller described the makeup process as "tedious." The plastic and prosthetics used on Miller would start to peel off due to the hot weather and outdoor scenes.
Miller found the makeup process challenging, but he was full of praise for the makeup team responsible for aging him and his co-stars. He even likened himself to Daniel Day-Lewis, stating that he was in character as Lights as soon as he put on the prosthetics for the film.
The film also stars Kyrie Irving, Shaquille O'Neal, Chris Webber, Nate Robinson, and Lisa Leslie, who all play septuagenarians. Miller, along with his co-stars, spent 2 ½ to 3 hours in the makeup chair to look the part.
Despite the bad blood and history between him and the New York Knicks, Miller was welcomed at Rucker Park, a hallowed court in Harlem, in a work of fiction. However, it's clear that Miller has great respect for the Knicks, as he likened the hypothetical move to Kevin Durant leaving Oklahoma City to join the Golden State Warriors in 2016.
"Uncle Drew" hits theaters on Friday, and fans are eager to see Miller's performance in his first movie role. Regardless of whether he was the baddest shooter of all time or not, there's no denying that Miller's character, Lights, is sure to be a memorable one.
