Actress Barbara Eden marks her 94th birthday; highlights of the I Dream of Jeannie icon's life revealed
Barbara Eden, the iconic actress known for her role as Jeannie in the popular sitcom I Dream of Jeannie, celebrated her 94th birthday on August 23, 2025. Fans of the beloved star will have the opportunity to honour her milestone during the fan convention, The Hollywood Show, on September 5-6, 2025, in Burbank, California.
Born as Barbara Jean Morehead in Tucson, Arizona, in 1931, Eden's acting career began in the mid-1950s, with TV roles setting the stage for her eventual rise to fame. She made her debut on The Johnny Carson Show in 1955, and her talent was quickly recognised. Eden initially aspired to become an opera singer but later decided to pursue acting instead.
Eden's parents, Alice Mary and Hubert Henry Morehead, separated when she was young, and she moved to San Francisco with her mother. During her time in San Francisco, Eden participated in beauty pageants, including the Miss California contest.
NBC's I Dream of Jeannie, which aired from 1965 to 1970, was a major highlight in Eden's career. She was approached for the titular role by writer Sidney Sheldon. The show was a significant success, and Eden's portrayal of Jeannie remains a cultural touchstone to this day.
After I Dream of Jeannie, Eden appeared in various movies, including The Wonderful World of the Brothers Grimm and Five Weeks in a Balloon. She also made guest appearances on shows like I Love Lucy and Father Knows Best.
Following her time on I Dream of Jeannie, Eden was featured opposite Elvis Presley in the 1960 movie Flaming Star. Her career continued to thrive, with roles in Harper Valley P.T.A. between 1981 and 1982, and A Brand New Life (1989-90).
Eden's accomplishments extend beyond the screen. She released her memoir, Jeannie Out of the Bottle, in 2011, offering readers an intimate look into her life and career. Eden has also been associated with the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and the Elizabeth Holloway School of Theatre.
Unfortunately, Eden's son, Matthew Ansara, died of a heroin overdose in 2001. This tragic event has not deterred Eden from continuing her work and maintaining her presence in the entertainment industry.
In 1988, Eden was honoured with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, a testament to her enduring impact on popular culture. As we celebrate the 60th anniversary of I Dream of Jeannie, fans will have the chance to honour Eden's contributions to the world of entertainment at The Hollywood Show in Burbank, California.
