Additional Stadler trains en route to Stockholm's metropolitan area
The Roslagsbanan railway line, a unique 65-kilometer network connecting the northeastern suburbs of Stockholm with the capital, is set to receive ten more electric locomotives from Swiss train manufacturer Stadler.
Stockholm Transport (SL) has already ordered ten further Stadler electric trains and exercised the option for these vehicles on August 13, 2025. The trains are specially designed for the Roslagsbanan's unique 891 mm narrow gauge and are built in Bussnang, Switzerland.
The delivery is planned to begin in 2027 with operations starting in 2028. The new locomotives will replace vehicles over 30 years old from another manufacturer, aiming to enhance the reliability and efficiency of the service.
Stadler locomotives have been operating on the Roslagsbanan network since 2023, demonstrating their reliability under daily operation and even under harsh climatic conditions, according to the manufacturer.
The new locomotives are designed to be barrier-free, offering ample space for strollers and wheelchairs. They can accommodate approximately 300 passengers, with 150 seats available.
The contract with SL includes an option for a total of 31 more vehicles, potentially increasing the fleet size in the future. The total value of the order, including the option for additional vehicles, is approximately 100 million euros.
The Roslagsbanan railway line, with its unique track gauge of 891 millimeters, will continue to be serviced by customized locomotives built by Stadler. This move is part of SL's commitment to modernizing and improving the service on the Roslagsbanan line.
