'Adept Illustration of the Intimidation Many Experience When Opting to Contend or Dare in Professional Sports, as Discussed by Mickelson Following Noteworthy Performance at The Open'
In the current golf season, a group of top players, including Phil Mickelson, Rory McIlroy, and Collin Morikawa, have collectively boycotted press conferences as a protest against the increased media scrutiny and pressure during tournaments.
Rory McIlroy and Collin Morikawa, along with others, have declined media interviews this season. The latest to join this movement was Wyndham Clark, who opted not to speak to the media after a impressive five-under 66 at The Open on Saturday, despite his significant rise up the leaderboard.
The protests began earlier in the season when McIlroy skipped media after missing out on victory at the Arnold Palmer Invitational. McIlroy later explained his reasons during a press conference at The Players Championship a week later.
Meanwhile, Scottie Scheffler, who admitted that he doesn't find the sport satisfying, has been making headlines for his performances. Despite his initial struggles, Scheffler has since won the PGA Championship, finished T7 at the US Open, and currently leads The Open Championship going into the final round.
Mickelson, known for his outspoken nature, has been making waves with his performances despite the controversy. His bogey-free round at The Open is one of the joint most bogey-free rounds in the last 30 years, and at the age of 55, he achieved a bogey-free four-under 67 at The 153rd Open Championship. Mickelson's success has been a topic of discussion among his fellow players, with Kevin Kisner asking Mickelson for an update on his earlier tweet in response to his performance.
Not all players have supported the boycott, with former PGA Tour player, Rocco Mediate, calling McIlroy's move "pathetic" on SiriusXM PGA Tour Radio.
Joaquin Niemann, on the other hand, has had a mixed season. He finished T8 at the PGA Championship but missed the cut at the US Open and The Open Championship.
The boycott has had consequences for some players. Wyndham Clark, who broke an advertising board at the PGA Championship and a locker room door at the US Open, was banned from Oakmont Country Club following his incident.
In March, golf analyst Justin Ray posted a tweet comparing World No.1 Scottie Scheffler's performance in Major championships to LIV Golf League player Joaquin Niemann. Mickelson reacted to Ray's tweet, saying "Let's keep these tweets and see what happens throughout this year."
At the start of The Open Championship, Scheffler was praised for his lengthy and detailed answer about the meaning of golf to him. The future of the boycott remains to be seen as the season progresses.
