Adidas Collaboration Inspired by Bruce Lee, Acting Endeavors, and Upcoming Graphic Novel Pursued by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, the legendary basketball player and cultural icon, recently sat down at a Shoe Palace pop-up in L.A.'s Chinatown to discuss his latest collaboration with Adidas. The collection, aptly named the Kareem vs. Bruce collection, pays homage to Bruce Lee, with whom Abdul-Jabbar shared a deep connection.
Abdul-Jabbar, who starred as Hakim the Mantis in Lee's classic martial arts film "Game of Death," studied martial arts under the legendary actor. The collection includes yellow suede sneakers and graphic tees inspired by the film, featuring Abdul-Jabbar's trademark skyhook silhouette and Lee's "kick" motif.
The pop-up also showcased Abdul-Jabbar's latest graphic novel, Champion, and two of his books, We All Want to Change the World and his memoir, Becoming Kareem. Shannon Lee, Bruce Lee's daughter, was also present, with her bestselling book, Be Water My Friend, on display.
Abdul-Jabbar revealed that Lee's philosophy guided him throughout his life, and the collection is a testament to their shared values. He also shared memories of visiting the Lee household, including meeting Shannon and her brother, Brandon Lee.
Tragically, Brandon Lee, Bruce Lee's son, passed away at the age of 28 after being fatally wounded by a prop gun while filming The Crow. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar had to dissuade Brandon from trying to fight him due to their height difference.
The collection is available online and in stores at Shoe Palace, with a global rollout starting September 13. The price range for the Kareem vs. Bruce collection is $45 to $95.
In addition to his work in entertainment, Abdul-Jabbar is also a strong advocate for social justice. The NBA established the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Social Justice Champion Award in his honour, which acknowledges players striving for social justice and funds political and charitable organizations connected to social equity causes.
Jrue Holiday was named the 2024-25 recipient of the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Trophy for his work through the Jrue and Lauren Holiday Social Impact Fund. Abdul-Jabbar has also been seen onscreen in guest roles in "Billions" and "Night Court."
The Kareem vs. Bruce collection is more than just a tribute to a legendary actor and a celebration of martial arts. It is a testament to the enduring bond between two icons and a call to action for social justice.
