Administration's funding withhold for 34 cities and counties foiled by judge due to disputes over 'sanctuary' practices
In a significant turn of events, a federal judge has issued a preliminary injunction to halt the Trump administration's efforts to withhold grant funding from cities and counties with "sanctuary" status for undocumented immigrants.
The ruling, issued by Judge William Orrick, expands the number of cities that federal funds can't be withheld from due to their immigration policies. More than 30 cities, including Albuquerque and Boston, are now under the protection of this judicial order, which amounts to hundreds of millions of dollars in grants at risk for non-compliance.
However, the exact number of cities affected by Judge Orrick's order, which risks HUD funding for refusing cooperation with immigration authorities, is 8. These cities include New York City, New York state, Los Angeles, Colorado, Illinois, and New Jersey, among others.
The Trump administration has been increasing its efforts to have "sanctuary cities" cooperate with the federal government. In line with this, the Department of Justice has filed several legal challenges in these cities and states. The Department is currently suing Los Angeles over its sanctuary city policy.
The administration sought to strip the Housing and Urban Development (HUD) grants from cities that do not cooperate with immigration authorities. This move was met with resistance, leading to the legal challenges and the subsequent preliminary injunction.
These legal challenges are aimed at policies that block immigration officials from arresting people at or near courthouses without a warrant signed by a judge. The ruling is a significant victory for cities and counties that have adopted "sanctuary" policies, which limit their cooperation with federal immigration authorities.
The battle between the Trump administration and these cities continues, but for now, the funds are safe, and the cities can continue their policies without the threat of funding cuts. The outcome of these legal battles could have far-reaching implications for immigration policy in the United States.
