Adolescent Boy Admitted to Purposely Igniting Multiple Fires Across Portugal, According to Police Declarations

In the heart of Portugal, the fire in the Vinhais municipality remains the only significantly active blaze, posing a danger to the local population and consuming several hectares of forest. The fire, which started on Tuesday morning, is currently active on three fronts, one of which is difficult to access.

Over 400 firefighters, 140 vehicles, and six planes were deployed to tackle the Vinhais fire on Friday, as temperatures in Portugal were expected to range between 14 and 32 degrees Celsius. The regional commander of the civil protection agency provided an update on the Vinhais fire to the Lusa news agency, stating that, on two out of three fronts, "most of its perimeter is under control."

Meanwhile, the Portuguese Institute for the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) has placed the entire interior and south of the country on maximum alert for very high risk of wildfires. This alert comes as temperatures have been dropping over the last week, aiding firefighting efforts.

In a shocking turn of events, a 14-year-old boy has admitted to starting several wildfires in Portugal. The boy, who confessed to being responsible for the forest fires in Seidões, Ardegão, and Arnozela, reportedly used matches while riding a scooter to forest areas. The police investigation was launched due to wildfires repeatedly starting in the same areas.

The Public Prosecutor's Office will take the case to the Family and Children's Court. By 20 August, police had already arrested 52 people on suspicion of arson, with most of the arrests made in August. It is believed that the boy may have acted out of anger and frustration due to poor school performance and precarious social relationships.

The fires caused concern among the local population and have consumed several hectares of forest. The authorities urge the public to remain vigilant and follow all safety instructions during this critical period. As the firefighting efforts continue, the hope is that the situation will improve, and Portugal will return to peace and tranquility.
