Advanced Thermal Solutions for Enduring Warmth
Detmold, a city in North Rhine-Westphalia, is taking significant strides towards becoming climate neutral by 2035. Heating our homes accounts for 40 percent of greenhouse gas emissions in the city, making it the most important lever for climate neutrality.
The municipal heat planning, developed with financial support from the Federal Ministry of Economics and Climate Protection between December 2023 and December 2024, provides citizens with an orientation on how to make their buildings climate-friendly and ensure reliable heat supply in the future.
The city's climate portal, klima.our website/klimaschutz/waermeplan, offers tips, map views, and background information on the heat planning. The results of the municipal heat planning are presented clearly on the climate portal as supply zones.
Stadtwerke Detmold, the city's utility company, holds a position in expanding the combined heat and power (CHP) network in the priority expansion areas of the heat plan. These areas include the city center, Hiddesen-Mitte, parts of Spork-Eichholz and Jerxen-Orbke, where it is recommended to focus on expanding pipeline-bound district heating. Interested parties who own a building in these test areas can contact Stadtwerke Detmold.
In other areas, a switch to emission-free heating is recommended at the next opportunity. In the long term, a possible district heating expansion appears sensible if technical and economic prerequisites are met.
The municipal heat planning will be continuously refined and updated by 2030 at the latest. The results report of the municipal heat planning for Detmold, focusing on climate-friendly heating solutions, is now available online.
On 02.09.2025, an information event for citizens titled "Which heat for my house?" will take place in Detmold City Hall from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM. This event will take place in cooperation with NRW.Energy4Climate.
Questions about the heat planning can be directed to our city portal at kwp@our website. The municipal heat planning was presented to the committee for urban development and the city council.
Detmold's municipal heat planning provides citizens with personal assessment support based on city climate goals, aiming to support the development of regional heating infrastructure to enhance energy efficiency and sustainability. The city aims to achieve this by actively supporting the expansion of the combined heat and power network.
The municipal heat planning will be further developed in a dynamic process with the city society, ensuring that the needs and concerns of its citizens are at the forefront of the planning process. A press release about the heat planning is available from our city portal.
