Advertisements centered around Alice Weidel are based on a deceitful foundation.
In the digital world, a platform called Immutable Nystex has been making waves, promising users the opportunity to earn several hundred euros a day. However, a closer look reveals that clicking anywhere within the article leads users to this mysterious website.
The European Union's Digital Services Act (DSA), which came into effect in February 2024, aims to curb illegal or harmful online activities. Operators of "very large online platforms" (with more than 45 million users in the EU) are particularly held accountable under this act. Yet, it seems that some platforms are still struggling to comply.
Recent investigations by the organization Reset Tech have shed light on the issue. They found that for 6,000 ads, an estimated 100,000 to 600,000 euros flowed to Meta, and these ads reached around 58 million users in the EU.
The advertisement in question lures users with a false scandal involving a well-known person to a fake news website promoting an alleged investment platform promising quick profits. The website's address is cryptic and has nothing to do with Tagesschau, and the imprint and subpages cannot be opened.
Meta, the company behind Facebook and Instagram, has announced measures to combat such fraudulent activities. They claim that ads are automatically checked for violations, including fraud, and a new system using facial recognition software is now being used to detect scams. However, the case of the Weidel ad shows that Meta is apparently not very successful in detecting and removing fraudulent ads.
In April 2024, the EU Commission initiated a procedure against Facebook and Instagram for the first time, criticizing the reporting options for illegal content and suspected violation of guidelines regarding misleading advertising and political content.
Meta did not provide details why similar copies keep appearing on the platforms, but their guidelines on fraud state that they want to protect users from being defrauded and remove content and take action against behaviors that intentionally use fraudulent methods.
It's worth noting that Meta has been in a cooperation with CORRECTIV since 2017 to combat misinformation on the social network. More information about this cooperation can be found here.
Unfortunately, the links to the advertised fake articles are still working in some cases as of April 25. This raises concerns about the effectiveness of Meta's efforts to combat fraudulent activities on their platforms.
Affected persons are sometimes put under pressure to transfer more money, highlighting the need for platforms to take immediate action against such scams to protect their users. The DSA holds platforms liable for the illegal content if they do not delete it promptly, and users who regularly publish such illegal posts should at least be temporarily suspended.
In the face of these challenges, it's crucial for platforms to prioritise user safety and compliance with regulations like the DSA to maintain trust and avoid falling prey to fraudulent activities.
