Aerial Deer Rescue Operation
In the picturesque Leonberg district, a dedicated group of volunteers, led by Markus Schmid, known as the Fawn Rescue Team, have been working tirelessly to protect the region's young deer population. This year alone, they have successfully rescued close to 250 fawns.
The team's efforts are crucial, as hunting is regularly carried out to regulate wildlife populations and prevent damage. However, during early summer, unleashed dogs can pose a significant threat to young deer and hares. To help mitigate this risk, the team is seeking volunteer drone pilots, with no prior hunting license needed.
The drone pilots play a vital role in locating fawns, as the team uses the drone screens to identify differently coloured spots, which indicate the presence of a fawn. Upon finding a fawn, rescuers carefully grasp it with gloves and handfuls of grass, before placing it in a box.
When speaking about his experiences, team member Benjamin Schmid shares that finding a fawn and ensuring its safe escape is a special experience. Rescued fawns often go on to be encountered by hunters years later, having been saved from a potential cruel fate.

In addition to the fawn rescue efforts, the district is also known for its appreciation of wild meat as a sustainable food source. This was evident at the recent farm festival, where venison goulash, venison burgers, and wild boar fillet were among the dishes available.
Farmers in the region are also required to search for wild animals, particularly fawns, before mowing. This practice ensures that the young deer are not inadvertently harmed during agricultural activities.
The work of the Fawn Rescue Team in the Leonberg district is a testament to the community's commitment to preserving and protecting its wildlife. Their efforts not only save the lives of countless fawns but also contribute to the sustainability of the region's ecosystem.
