Nottingham's New £4.7m Housing Project: A Historic Milestone for Tuntum Housing Association
Tuntum Housing Association has made history with the completion of a new £4.7m housing development on Manning Street, off Woodborough Road in Nottingham. The project, named after Des Wilson and Tony Robinson, two great men from the city's history, includes 17 houses and 11 flats and is already fully tenanted.
Des Wilson, a pioneering former city councillor from the Windrush generation, was the first black Lord Mayor of Nottingham. Tony Robinson, another Windrush generation resident, was also a pioneer, serving as the city's first black Sheriff. The families of both men gave permission for the streets to be named after them and participated in the opening ceremony.
The founders of Tuntum, community activists and professionals from Nottingham's black community, aimed to demonstrate black community self-help and create economic opportunities. They were motivated by the desire to correct inequality in housing provision and build social capital. Tuntum specializes in housing services for older people, refugees, young mothers, people suffering with mental health difficulties, and homeless young people. The development was delivered in partnership with Homes England and Nottingham Community Housing Association. Homes England provided a £1.1 million grant subsidy for the project. Tuntum is grateful for the support received.
