Werner Pohlke Bids Farewell to Anklam Flea Market After Decades of Trade
After many years of trading at the Anklam flea market, Werner Pohlke, a well-known figure at the Peene-Promenade market, has announced his retirement due to health reasons. The retired locksmith and steel construction worker will not postpone his farewell, which is set for September 7th, 2023.
Pohlke, who is often seen wearing a welder's helmet, a tuxedo adorned with medals, and carrying a black cashier's bag, has been a regular at the market for decades. Initially, he drove to various other markets in the region, but in recent years, he has dedicated himself entirely to the flea market in his hometown.
His wife, Ilse Pohlke (75), also started selling items at the local flea market, initially focusing on children's items for her grandchildren. Over time, their involvement expanded, with neighbors and acquaintances bringing their wares. The Pohlkes' offerings include a wide variety of items such as children's items, discarded household items, relics from GDR times, tools, old garden equipment, and many other flea market treasures from apartment clearances and barn and attic finds from the entire region.
Werner Pohlke approaches the flea market in a professional and large-scale manner, having acquired a barn in the Anklam area to store all his treasures. He spends a lot of time in the workshop examining, cleaning, and repairing everything. Despite his retirement, he still has plenty to do, clearing up and selling the remaining goods. There will be no liquidation of Werner Pohlke's treasures at this point.
Werner Pohlke remains aware of the value of his goods and relies entirely on his negotiating skills. His daughter and granddaughter, who live in Brandenburg, are regulars at the Anklam flea market. They support him in his endeavors, along with the assistance of other flea market traders.
Pohlke sets off to secure his regular spot on the river promenade around midnight, needing enough space for his stand and ensuring all utensils are attractively displayed. He aims to catch the attention of passersby with his quirky attire and a few witty remarks.
After his last appearance on September 7th, Werner Pohlke will likely need some time to distance himself from the hustle and bustle of the flea market. His wife, Ilse, hopes for more support from her husband in future garden work.
