Agreement for enhancing the Lake Constance bike path's quality

The Lake Constance Cycle Route, a popular long-distance cycling route in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, has taken a significant step forward with the signing of a quality pact by participating municipalities. This initiative was spearheaded by the Lake Constance Cycle Route office, with support from the Nahverkehrsgesellschaft Baden-Württemberg (NVBW) on behalf of the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Transport.

The quality pact aims to coordinate improvements across municipalities and borders, a move that further strengthens the region's cohesion. Signed by municipalities along the Lake Constance Cycle Route, districts of Bodenseekreis and Konstanz, government districts of Tübingen and Freiburg, this agreement promises a coordinated approach to development.

Mayor Robert Scherer of the city of Meersburg highlighted the importance of the Lake Constance Cycle Route, stating it is one of the most significant tourist and cultural axes in their region, offering substantial added value for guests and citizens alike. The close cooperation of municipalities and international cooperation aim to make the cycle route even more attractive and safe.

Transport Minister Winfried Hermann emphasized the need for demand-oriented improvements to maintain and further strengthen the great attractiveness of the cycle route. The Lake Constance Cycle Route is a national ADFC quality cycle route, and with this pact, it is expected to continue meeting the high standards of a national cycle route in the future.

The Lake Constance Cycle Route was established in 1983 at the initiative of the International Lake Constance Conference (ILCC). Since then, it has become one of the most popular long-distance cycling routes in the region, connecting the countries and cantons around Lake Constance. In a resolution passed in June 2025, these countries and cantons committed to a coordinated further development.

Continuous improvements are necessary for the Lake Constance Cycle Route, including separation from motor vehicle traffic, removal of bottlenecks, better signage, and measures to increase traffic safety. The business office of the Lake Constance Cycle Route will coordinate this quality management and is located at the International Lake Constance Tourism GmbH.

The Lake Constance Cycle Route forms the backbone of cycling around Lake Constance, part of the RadNETZ BW. It enables quick, direct daily connections for citizens and offers tourists a varied cycling tour along the lake. This kind of coordinated approach can serve as a model for the quality management of other national long-distance cycle routes. The ILCC continues to support the joint quality development of the cycle route.

In the past, the Lake Constance Cycle Route has received significant support from political decision-makers, such as the former Umweltminister von Baden-Württemberg, Franz Untersteller, who highlighted the importance of cross-border cooperation for the development and networking of the cycle route. The continued commitment to this project underscores the importance of sustainable tourism and economic development in the region.
