Agricultural workers in the Lower Rhine region generously contribute vast quantities of potatoes to local dining tables
A bountiful potato harvest in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, has led to a surplus of hundreds of tons. Three farmers in the Lower Rhine region have joined forces to donate their surplus potatoes to food banks and crisis areas, as sales in the fries industry have fallen due to high energy prices.
The food banks in Gelsenkirchen, Dortmund, and Coesfeld will receive potatoes from the Tafel Duisburg. The initial plan was to send the potatoes to crisis areas, but due to the inability of the food banks to take in all the potatoes, some will be donated abroad.
The first truck of donated potatoes is leaving for the Ukraine this week, with more trucks planned to follow. The donation drive is scheduled to last until September 8, 2027, and the exact amount of potatoes donated has not been specified.
Several factors have contributed to the exceptionally good potato harvest this year, including no frost and timely rain. The surplus potatoes could potentially feed a million people for half a year, according to Bernd Hesseling from Bauernmarkt Lindchen in Uedem.
Martin Kanders from the North Rhine-Westphalia Chamber of Agriculture has made a statement, but the content was not specified in the article. The Chamber has reacted positively to the farmers' initiative, which carries the motto "Potatoes instead of bombs".
If the surplus potatoes cannot be sold profitably, they would typically be crushed in the field, converted to biogas, or used for animal feed. However, these potatoes will now be used to ease acute hunger.
The search results do not provide information about when the donated potatoes from the three farmers in Niederrhein are transported abroad. The sales in the fries industry have fallen due to high energy prices, affecting exports of fries, chips, and food potatoes. This situation has resulted in a drop in prices paid by industry and trade for potatoes.
Despite the challenges faced by the fries industry, the farmers' initiative has received widespread support. The donation drive is part of a larger effort to help those in need and promote a more sustainable approach to agriculture.
