Hinge Embraces AI to Enhance Dating Experience

Hinge, a popular dating app owned by Match Group, is using artificial intelligence (AI) to improve the dating experience for its users. The app, which was co-founded by Justin McLeod and Tim MacGougan in 2011 and acquired by Match Group in 2018, is taking a different approach to AI compared to some, such as Mark Zuckerberg, who sees digital chatbots as a potential solution to loneliness.

Hinge's AI is designed to be a tool that enhances the user's dating experience, but it should not become the primary focus or replace human interaction. The AI helps users improve their profiles and makes conversation starters easier. Hinge uses AI to recommend personalized matches based on users' past interactions, preferences, and now, family planning.

The app's AI is also transparent and does not create barriers between users. In a podcast, McLeod stated that AI is used to recognize patterns in users' responses to prompts, not to dictate conversations. On Wednesday, the app was used to get AI feedback on responses to conversation starter questions, with suggestions for improvement and praise given for funny and interesting responses.

The strategic use of AI has paid off for Hinge. In the second quarter, the app had a 18% user growth and generated $168 million (around €144 million) in revenue, a 25% increase from the previous year. The number of paying users of Hinge grew by 18% year-over-year to 1.7 million, and the average revenue per paying user increased by 6%.

Match Group CEO Spencer Rascoff stated that Hinge's success is a testament to a motivated team and a great product. McLeod expressed that AI should not be used for entertainment or artificial intimacy. Instead, it should facilitate better interactions and faster in-person meetings.

Hinge is a success in the dating app industry, combating app fatigue and the growing preference for personal interactions. The app is committed to maintaining a human touch in the dating experience, ensuring that AI remains a tool to improve connections, not replace them.
