U.N. Condemns Rise in Attacks on Healthcare and Aid Workers

The United Nations (U.N.) has expressed grave concern over the escalating violence against healthcare and aid workers, with over 800 attacks reported in 16 territories this year. The attacks have resulted in the tragic loss of more than 1,110 health workers and patients, and have left hundreds more wounded, kidnapped, or detained.

These disturbing figures were revealed on World Humanitarian Day, a day that commemorates the day in 2003 when U.N. rights chief Sergio Vieira de Mello and 21 other humanitarians were killed in the bombing of the U.N. headquarters in Baghdad.

The U.N. has reiterated that such attacks on aid workers and operations violate international humanitarian law. State actors were identified as the most common perpetrators of these killings in 2024.

The deadliest regions for aid workers were Gaza and Sudan. In Gaza, 181 humanitarian workers lost their lives, and in Sudan, 60 did. These attacks have raised serious concerns about the lack of accountability for the perpetrators, who often go unpunished and unprosecuted.

U.N. emergency relief coordinator and under-secretary-general for humanitarian affairs, Tom Fletcher, has called for an end to the violence against aid workers. He stated that even one attack against a humanitarian colleague is an attack on all of us and on the people they serve.

The Aid Worker Security Database shows that as of August 14, 2022, 265 aid workers have been killed. Most of these victims were local staff, either attacked in the line of duty or in their homes.

The U.N. branded the figures and lack of accountability a "shameful indictment" of international apathy. The increase in the number of deaths, up 31 percent from the previous year, was attributed to conflicts in Gaza and Sudan.

In 2024, a record 383 aid workers were killed, making it the deadliest year on record. The most frequent perpetrators of these murders were in the Palestinian territories, where 108 of the recorded 245 attacks on aid workers occurred. This region was the most dangerous for aid workers, with a notable lack of accountability for the perpetrators.

The U.N. expressed its deepest condolences to the families and friends of those who have been killed and urged for a renewed commitment to protect aid workers and ensure their safety. The organization emphasized that attacks on healthcare and aid workers are not just attacks on individuals, but attacks on the very fabric of humanitarian response and the people they serve.
