Qantas Considering Beard Ban for Pilots Amid Safety Concerns

Australian airline Qantas is currently evaluating a proposal that could lead to a ban on beards for its pilots, a move that has sparked controversy and debate within the industry.

The proposed ban, which extends to QantasLink, the airline's regional arm, is based on findings from QinetiQ, a British defense consultancy. According to the report, facial hair could compromise the seal of oxygen masks, posing a potential risk in emergency situations.

However, a 2024 scientific study by Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University found "no evidence that facial hair caused mask leaks, hypoxia, or chemicals to affect performance." Professor John French from Embry-Riddle University argued that the QinetiQ report relies on outdated military or industrial settings.

Professor French also noted that wearing glasses can pose a more substantial risk and is more likely to interfere with the oxygen mask seal than facial hair.

Qantas has asked QinetiQ to review the Embry-Riddle study and is currently considering feedback from its pilots. The airline opened a formal consultation from 15 July to 12 August to gather feedback on the proposed policy.

The Australian Federation of Air Pilots (AFAP) has expressed backlash against the proposed policy, stating that it is "already outdated and based on obsolete science." AFAP criticized the proposed Qantas beard ban, stating it shows a lack of "proper consultation with employees" and fails to demonstrate "respect for diverse workforces."

It's important to note that other major carriers, including Virgin Australia, Emirates, Etihad, and Cathay Pacific, allow tidily kept beards among their crews. In late 2022, the Royal Australian Air Force scrapped its beard ban, allowing beards as long as they are kept neat.

A final decision on the Qantas beard policy is expected in the coming weeks. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.
