Airline Travel: United Express Flight Incident - Passenger Violently Hits Aircraft's Ceiling due to Intense Turbulence
On July 5, 2010, SkyWest Flight 5971, en route from Aspen, Colorado, was forced to divert to Austin-Bergstrom International Airport due to severe turbulence. The aircraft, carrying 39 passengers and four crew members, dropped approximately 4,000 feet in a minute during the turbulence.
Upon landing, Austin-Travis County EMS evaluated all passengers and crew for potential injuries. Two adult passengers were transported to area hospitals out of an abundance of caution, but medical authorities reported that no injuries are expected to be life-threatening.
SkyWest, the operator of the flight, issued a statement expressing their concern for the safety and well-being of all onboard. They are working with United to assist customers affected by the diversion.
The flight altered course towards Austin, Texas, but no new information was provided about the cause or severity of the turbulence, the flight's landing, or the presence of medical personnel upon arrival.
Turbulence, often caused by disturbances like storms and mountains, appears to be increasing and is expected to worsen as the planet heats up. This incident serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of air travel and the importance of safety procedures in place to ensure the well-being of passengers and crew.
SkyWest prioritizes the safety and well-being of all onboard and is committed to providing a safe and reliable service. They will continue to work closely with aviation authorities to investigate the causes of the turbulence and take necessary precautions to prevent similar incidents in the future.
