Alabama's ABC institution establishes the Fall Protection Institute, aiming to reduce workplace accidents

The Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) of Alabama recently held a grand opening ceremony for the Fall Protection Institute of Alabama, a state-of-the-art facility aimed at enhancing worker safety in the construction industry.

Harrison, the ABC of Alabama Board Chairman, emphasised the importance of this initiative, stating, "We owe it to the families of every one of our employees to ensure they go home safely to their families daily."

The Institute, the first of its kind in the entire Southeast, is a testament to the organisation's commitment to worker safety. According to Harrison, "Until employees are safe, nothing else matters in the industry."

The idea to open the Institute remains undocumented, with no available search results providing information about who initiated the project or the year it was opened. However, it is known that the ABC of Alabama made a conscious decision to put safety in their strategic plan.

The Institute aims to take fall safety beyond the classroom and into a simulated workplace setting. To achieve this, ABC of Alabama partnered with the Academy of Craft Training, 3M Fall Protection, and BL Harbert International to develop a hands-on, real-world training environment.

The construction industry has seen a significant number of fatalities in recent years. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics' Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries report, the industry reported 1,075 fatalities in 2023. Falling on a job site is the number one cause of fatalities nationally, and in 2023, slips, trips, and falls accounted for more than 39 percent of all construction fatalities, making them the leading cause of death on job sites.

The ABC of Alabama's commitment to worker safety has not gone unnoticed. The organisation was awarded the Strategic Plan Chapter Performance Award for 2024-2029 at ABC National's Annual Convention in Las Vegas, primarily due to their comprehensive approach to worker safety.

The ABC of Alabama represents Alabama's merit-shop construction industry, which creates 200,000 jobs and accounts for 5 percent of the state's economic output. With the opening of the Fall Protection Institute of Alabama, the organisation continues to lead the way in promoting safety and reducing fatalities in the construction industry.
