Elected again as the first Black mayor of an Alabama town, who previously faced exclusion from his office.

Alabama's inaugural African-American mayor, previously barred from his post, secures victory in the election.

Newbern, Alabama, a town with a population of 133, held its first election in at least six decades last year, marking a significant milestone in its history. The mayoral election, held under a federal settlement, was the result of a lawsuit filed by Black residents challenging the town's governance.

The town's mayor-council government had not been put to a vote for six decades, leading to an overwhelmingly white government in a town where Black residents outnumber white residents 2-1. This issue was at the heart of the lawsuit, which alleged that outgoing council members held a secret meeting to set up a special election and "fraudulently reappointed themselves as the town council."

Patrick Braxton, a resident of Newbern, qualified to run for mayor in 2020 and became the mayor-elect without an election. However, he was denied access to the town hall and financial accounts. His legal battle to take office lasted for three years.

Braxton's election was a turning point for Newbern. The SPLC Action Fund, an organisation that works to combat hate and advocate for democratic governance, endorsed him in the mayoral election. The endorsement reaffirmed that every resident in Newbern has a voice in their local government and emphasised the importance of ensuring fair representation.

Laird Cole, a white auctioneer and Realtor, was the only challenger in this election. Braxton won the election, receiving 66 votes against Cole's 26. The SPLC Action Fund stated that Braxton's election represents a restoration of democratic governance in Newbern, ensuring fair representation and reaffirming that every resident has a voice in their local government.

Mayor Patrick Braxton finally occupied the office last year, ending a long legal battle and bringing democratic governance to Newbern. His election is a significant step towards ensuring fair representation and ensuring that every resident in Newbern has a voice in their local government.
