Alcaraz subdues Djokovic, leading to a US Open final matchup against Sinner
In a highly anticipated match, Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner faced off in the 2025 US Open men's singles final. The young Spanish phenom emerged victorious, defeating the Italian up-and-comer in four sets.
Alcaraz, who has been working tirelessly on maintaining consistency in his matches and tournaments, started the match strongly, closing out the first set without dropping a single service game. He continued to dominate, hitting twice as many winners as his opponent, Novak Djokovic, throughout the match.
The second set proved to be a closer affair, with both players showcasing their impressive skills. Alcaraz set up a break point after surviving a long rally in the second set, eventually converting it to take a commanding 4-2 lead. Djokovic, however, fought back, converting on a break point in the second game of the second set to level the score at 4-4. The set went to a tiebreak, where Djokovic outlasted Alcaraz in a cheeky exchange at the net, taking the set 7-6(4).
The third set saw a turning point when Djokovic gifted Alcaraz a break point with an untimely double fault in the fourth game. Alcaraz capitalised on the opportunity, breaking Djokovic's serve again to take a 5-2 lead. He closed out the set with another strong service game, securing the set 6-2.
In the fourth set, both players displayed resilience, with neither able to gain a significant advantage. Alcaraz saved three matchpoints to keep his French Open title in June, a testament to his determination and grit. Eventually, Alcaraz broke Djokovic's serve in the final game of the match, securing the title with a 6-4 scoreline in the fourth set.
Djokovic, who showed signs of wear and tear against Alcaraz, who is 16 years his junior, admitted that it was frustrating not being able to keep up with Alcaraz's level physically. Alcaraz, on the other hand, celebrated his victory, marking his fifth major title in his career.
This victory sets Alcaraz up for an exciting end to the year, with this being the third Grand Slam final meeting of the year between him and Sinner. The two had previously clashed in the U.S. Open quarter-final, where Alcaraz won after five sets. Alcaraz's next challenge will be defending his French Open title in June 2026.
Meanwhile, Sinner, who defeated Felix Auger-Aliassime in the U.S. Open semifinals with a score of 6-1 3-6 6-3 6-4, will look to bounce back and continue his impressive run in the Grand Slams. The tennis world eagerly awaits their next encounters.
