Alcaraz surges past Djokovic to secure a place in the US Open final
In a gripping semi-final clash at the US Open 2022, Carlos Alcaraz outplayed Novak Djokovic to secure a spot in the final. The match, which lasted 2 hours and 23 minutes, saw Alcaraz dominate with a final score of 6-4, 7-6 (4), 6-2.
Alcaraz, who is the first man since Roger Federer in 2015 to reach the US Open final without dropping a set, showcased his exceptional serving skills throughout the match. He produced 31 winners, more than double Djokovic's tally. Remarkably, Alcaraz did not face a single break point in the first set.
Djokovic, on the other hand, mentioned that best-of-five sets make it very difficult for him to play against Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner, particularly at the end stages of grand slams. He handed Alcaraz an early break in the third set due to a double-fault. As the match moved into a third set, Djokovic looked increasingly labored and did not look close to breaking back.
The second set was a nail-biter, going to a tiebreaker. Alcaraz won back-to-back points on his own serve while leading 5-4 in the tiebreaker. Djokovic converted his only break point of the match in Alcaraz's first service game of the second set. The tiebreaker ended 7-4 in Alcaraz's favour, securing him the set.
The winner of the semi-final between Jannik Sinner and Felix Auger-Aliassime will be Alcaraz's opponent in the final. Djokovic, despite his defeat, remains optimistic about his future in grand slams. He hinted that he would be open to playing more best-of-three set tournaments in 2026.
Djokovic has suffered straight-sets semi-final defeats against either Alcaraz or Sinner in each of his last three grand slam appearances. This defeat marks the second time in the entire tournament that Alcaraz had dropped his serve.
As Alcaraz prepares for the final, he will be looking to continue his impressive form and potentially claim his first grand slam title. The tennis world eagerly awaits the final showdown.
