Benjamin Bonzi, the unseeded Frenchman, has made a strong start to the US Open 2025, winning both of his first two matches in five sets. His most notable victory was against 2021 US Open champion Daniil Medvedev, a match that saw Medvedev receive a $42,500 fine for his outburst after a delay in play due to a photographer wandering onto the court.

Meanwhile, several seeded players have already been eliminated. No. 6 Ben Shelton and No. 17 Frances Tiafoe were among those who failed to progress. The No. 2-seeded Carlos Alcaraz is, however, still in the competition, having won his first Grand Slam title at Flushing Meadows in 2022.

Alcaraz, who had a brief scare with a right knee issue during his match, advanced to the third round with a comfortable 6-2, 6-4, 6-0 victory over Luciano Darderi. The 23-year-old Italian, making his debut as a seed at a major, put up a good fight but ultimately fell short. Alcaraz delivered 31 winners and had 12 unforced errors in the match, winning 70 out of 105 points that lasted four shots or fewer.

Alcaraz, who took a medical timeout and had his leg massaged by a trainer, mentioned that the knee issue was not a significant concern. He will face Novak Djokovic in the semifinals after winning his quarterfinal match. The male quarterfinalists playing on Saturday are Jannik Sinner, Felix Auger-Aliassime, Carlos Alcaraz, and Novak Djokovic. Sinner will face Auger-Aliassime, while Alcaraz will take on Djokovic.

Defending champion Aryna Sabalenka and 2024 runner-up Jessica Pegula also advanced in the women's tournament. However, Emma Raducanu's best run at Flushing Meadows since her 2021 trophy ended with a 6-1, 6-2 loss to No. 9 Elena Rybakina.

The 82nd-ranked Arthur Rinderknech reached the fourth round at a Slam for the first time by defeating Benjamin Bonzi 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, 6-2. Only two American men remain in the tournament. The third round wraps up on Saturday with Coco Gauff, Iga Swiatek, Naomi Osaka, and Jannik Sinner scheduled to play.
