Politician accused of avoiding payment of 38 million euros in taxes or expenses - Alleged Financial Misappropriation by Ex-Politician Amounting to 38 Million Euros

A high-profile trial is set to begin today at the Mönchengladbach Regional Court. The defendant, Wolfgang Bosbach, a former FDP local politician from Viersen, is accused of tax evasion amounting to nearly €38 million.

Bosbach, who served on both the Viersen City Council and the District Council, is also a recipient of the Federal Cross of Merit and an honorary knight of the Order of Malta. He is furthermore known for his long-standing membership in the FDP party.

The sham transactions at the heart of the case involve cars that did not exist, and Bosbach is accused of 37 criminal acts related to tax evasion. The charges span from 2009 to 2023.

The car dealer, who was taken into custody in May, is also a former car dealer. He stepped down from politics in January, citing personal and health reasons.

The tax evasion charge against Bosbach is particularly serious. If found guilty, he could face a substantial prison sentence and heavy fines.

The trial is scheduled to begin at 11:00 AM today, and the proceedings will be closely watched by the public and the media. The outcome of this case could have significant implications for Bosbach's political career and reputation.
