Allocated Funds of RM281.9 million Earmarked for Improvement of Toilets, Community Halls, and Parks, as Per Nga Kor Ming's Announcement
The Malaysian government is taking strides to enhance the cleanliness and maintenance of public parks across the nation. In a recent response to questions posed by Senators Datuk Mustafa Musa and Datuk Rosni Sohar, Minister Nga Kor Ming revealed the government's plans to implement artificial intelligence (AI) technology for monitoring cleanliness and damage in public parks.
However, it's important to note that the implementation of AI technology for monitoring cleanliness and damage in public parks is not automatic and varies among the three tiers of local authorities: city councils, municipal councils, and district councils. For the rest of the states, the cleaning of public parks remains under the jurisdiction of their respective local authorities.
To support these efforts, the Department of Local Government, under the Malaysian Ministry of Housing and Local Government, has provided funding for small-scale projects under the BP.1 Development Project to all 156 local authorities nationwide. This funding allocation includes resources for 1,730 projects, which involve the maintenance and upgrading of public toilets, multi-purpose halls, and recreational facilities.
The Malaysian Ministry of Housing and Local Government has approved an allocation of RM281.9 million for upgrading public facilities across the country from 2024 to July 31, 2023. This allocation is based on applications from local authorities and is divided into four scopes: infrastructure, public facilities, socioeconomics, and security.
In addition, the Federal Government has appointed three concession companies to manage waste collection and cleansing in states that have adopted the Solid Waste and Public Cleansing Management Act 2007 (Act 672), with jurisdiction over public parks. These companies are Alam Flora Sdn Bhd, Indah Water Konsortium Sdn Bhd, and SWM Environment Sdn Bhd.
Minister Nga Kor Ming supports the use of new technologies, including AI and drones, for monitoring cleanliness and damage to public facilities. He believes that these technologies will help ensure the upkeep of public parks and recreational facilities, contributing to a cleaner and more sustainable environment for all Malaysians.
