"Almaty's mayor explains charitable donation to impoverished family"
Ualihanov Boulevard in Almaty is currently undergoing a significant transformation, with the full replacement of its paving stones being a key part of a larger reconstruction project. The works, which started due to the deterioration of the existing stones, are being carried out with a budget of 500 million tenge, including VAT.
The paving stones on the boulevard, last replaced in 2004, are no longer available as the material has been discontinued. An attempt to partially replace the stones in 2024 was unsuccessful due to the unavailability of an identical sample.
The reconstruction project includes more than just replacing the worn-out paving stones. It also involves installing new lighting, automatic irrigation systems, setting up small architectural forms and barriers, and greening the area.
Parallel to the works on Ualihanov Boulevard, the works on Karasai Batyr Street from Dostyk to Nazarbayev cost 204 million tenge. The Almaty's Akimat reported that the total cost of these works would be 446 million tenge.
In an unusual turn of events, a family in the Almaty region received cobblestones from Ualihanov Street, intended for disposal under the contract, in 2021. Activist Sanjar Bokayev posted a video on Instagram showing paving stones from Ualihanov Street being transported to a private house in the Almaty region. However, the contractor organization, with the agreement of the customer, had transferred about 90 meters of removed paving stones to a needy family.
The statement confirmed that, according to the contract conditions, the removed material is to be disposed of. The rest of the removed material is stored at the contractor's base.
The works on Ualihanov Boulevard are not the only works being covered by the 500 million tenge budget. In 2014, repair works were carried out on the boulevard, but only barrier installation and partial automatic irrigation system installation were done.
The reconstruction works on Ualihanov Boulevard are from Shevchenko to Kazybek Bi. The works are progressing, and the boulevard is expected to regain its former glory, providing a more pleasant and safe environment for residents and visitors alike.
