Alternative fuels, digital technology, and tight partnerships with suppliers in JLR's strategy
Jaguar Land Rover and Milence Pioneer Sustainable Charging Solutions
Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) and Milence, a joint venture between Daimler Truck, the Traton Group, and the Volvo Group, are leading the charge towards a more sustainable future for the automotive industry.
In a significant move, Milence has opened its first UK charging hub in Immingham, offering eight charging bays for electric trucks. The company plans to expand this network with another four charging bays at a new hub in Aylesford by the end of this year. Milence's commitment to building and operating 1,700 high-performance public charging points in Europe by 2027 underscores their dedication to a greener future.
Meanwhile, JLR is navigating various challenges to decarbonise its operations. The automaker is working closely with logistics and energy suppliers to create corridors where they can collaborate to optimise loads and invest in charging infrastructure for electric trucks.
One of the key challenges faced by JLR has been the tariff-induced ambiguity. In April, the threat of 25% tariffs on imports of finished vehicles by the US President Donald Trump forced JLR to pause its US shipments. However, a deal between the US and UK brought vehicle import tariffs down to 10% in May, allowing JLR to restart shipments.
The ongoing crisis in the Red Sea has also caused an imbalance in the automotive logistics ecosystem, forcing the industry to take longer routes and increasing pollution from deep-sea vessels. JLR is actively seeking solutions to mitigate these environmental impacts.
In a bid to be more collaborative and creative, JLR is exploring the possibility of sharing charging or refuelling hubs with companies like Milence. This collaboration could enable the flows to be conducted by sustainable fuels, a step towards decarbonising the industry.
Levent Yuksel, the CEO of Jaguar Land Rover, is committed to strategically locating alternative refuelling stations for their sustainable fleets to optimize accessibility and support the adoption of environmentally friendly vehicles.
As the automotive industry grapples with the threat and introduction of tariffs, supply chain chaos, and environmental crises, companies like JLR and Milence are demonstrating that collaboration and innovation can pave the way towards a more sustainable future.
