Alumna from Holy Cross Extended an Invitation to Deliver Remarks at the 2024 State of the Union Address
The College of the Holy Cross will celebrate its 177th Graduating Class on May 26, 2023, with a special guest in attendance – Commander Shelby Nikitin '04. This year marks the 50th anniversary of co-education at the College and the renaming of Fenwick Hall to Fauci Hall, in honour of Dr. Anthony Fauci, a prominent alumnus.
Commander Nikitin, who graduated from Holy Cross in 2004 with a B.A. in Mathematics, will be recognised for her extraordinary leadership and bravery in defending lives and protecting the free flow of commerce in the Red Sea. Dr. Biden has invited Commander Nikitin to the 2024 State of the Union Address due to her notable achievements.
During her active service in the United States Navy, Commander Nikitin served aboard the USS Chosin, holding roles as both the Electrical Officer and Training Officer. She also attended the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California, where she earned an M.S. in Operations Analysis. Commander Nikitin's leadership aboard the USS Thomas Hunder was successful in protecting maritime shipping from Houthi attacks in the Red Sea.
Commander Nikitin's naval career has seen her serve in various positions, including as a Junior Officer Detailer, Officer Candidate School accessions coordinator, Special Assistant and Flag Aide to the Chief of Naval Operations, Shore Coordinator, and Assistant Captain Detailer. In recognition of her service, Commander Nikitin was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for the ship's actions in the combat zone.
The commencement ceremony will take place at the DCU Center in Worcester. U.S. Senator Peter Welch '69, a Democrat, will be the commencement speaker. The first women were admitted to the College in 1972, with Psychology Professor Maureen Begley Zlody being the first female faculty member at the College.
This year's event holds significant importance as it commemorates the 50th anniversary of co-education at the College of the Holy Cross. The renaming of Fenwick Hall to Fauci Hall is a testament to the College's commitment to honouring its distinguished alumni. The College community looks forward to celebrating the achievements of the Class of 2023 and welcoming Commander Shelby Nikitin '04 back to campus.
