Naval Commander Shelby Nikitin '04 Honoured with Distinction

In a series of impressive achievements, Commander Shelby Nikitin '04 of the United States Navy has been recognised for her exceptional leadership and service.

Commander Nikitin's naval career began at the College of the Holy Cross, where she graduated with a B.A. in Mathematics in 2004. Her journey continued as she became a Commissioned Officer through the Holy Cross ROTC program.

Her service aboard the USS Chosin saw her complete two Arabian Gulf Deployments in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. Her leadership was instrumental in the ship's actions in a combat zone, earning her the prestigious Bronze Star Medal.

In addition to the Bronze Star Medal, Commander Nikitin has also been awarded the Meritorious Service Medal, the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal. Her team's successes, including the winning of the Spokane trophy and the Battle 'E' ribbon, further testify to her abilities as a commander.

Recently, Commander Nikitin's leadership aboard the USS Thomas Hunder helped protect maritime shipping from Houthi attacks in the Red Sea. This significant contribution to national security has earned her further recognition and respect.

Away from the battlefield, Commander Nikitin has also made a mark in academia. She attended the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California, and earned an M.S. in Operations Analysis.

The College of the Holy Cross, where Commander Nikitin's journey began, will celebrate its 177th Graduating Class on May 26, 2023, at the DCU Center in Worcester. U.S. Senator Peter Welch '69, a distinguished alumnus of the college, will be the commencement speaker and will also receive an honorary degree during the ceremony.

Interestingly, the college, which admitted women for the first time in 1972, will be renamed Fauci Hall in honour of another prominent alumnus, Dr. Anthony Fauci.

In a remarkable turn of events, Commander Nikitin was invited by First Lady Dr. Jill Biden to the 2024 State of the Union Address. However, the details surrounding who invited Commander Nikitin as a guest before the 2024 presidential inauguration speech are not currently available.

As we celebrate Commander Nikitin's achievements, we also recognise the 50th anniversary of co-education at the College of the Holy Cross. Psychology Professor Maureen Begley Zlody, the first female faculty member at the college in 1963, paved the way for women like Commander Nikitin to thrive in this esteemed institution.

Commander Nikitin's story is a testament to the impact one individual can have, both in the military and in academia. Her journey serves as an inspiration to current and future students of the College of the Holy Cross.
