In an episode of the popular TV show "Bares für Rares" on August 31st, an unexpected item caught the attention of the audience and participants alike. The item in question was a black, accordion-shaped cat, designed by Czech toy designer Libuše Niklová.
The cat, which squeaks when pressed, resembles the famous rubber duck toys and evoked childhood memories for participant Jan Čížek. The cat, bearing the logo of the Czech company "Fatra Napajedla," impressed everyone in the dealer's room, including Jan Čížek who recognised its origin from the Czech Republic.
The bidding for the cat started at a humble 20 euros and escalated quickly. Jan Čížek and Waldi engaged in a rapid bidding duel for the cult item. In the end, Jan Čížek won the bidding and purchased the cat for 250 euros.
The condition of the cat is exceptionally good, which contributed to its high selling price. Horst Lichter, a participant on the show, noticed an interesting detail: someone had bitten the cat's tail, leaving visible teeth marks.
"Bares für Rares" typically features items like sparkling gold jewelry, luxurious watches, and unique paintings, which often change hands at astronomical prices. However, the plastic cat designed by Libuše Niklová typically costs between 200 and 500 euros, depending on the condition and edition. The show's expert, Detlev Kümmel, was unsure about the exact production date of the cat, estimating it to be towards the end of the 60s or the beginning of the 70s.
Manuela Köpke, another participant on the show, caused a stir with this cat in an episode of "Bares für Rares Favorites." Jan Čížek was visibly taken with the cat, and the sale of the cat resulted in a happy ending for both Manuela and Jan.
