Ammonia-equipped vessel delivered to Grimaldi Group

In a significant step towards a greener future, Hoegh Autoliners has ordered ammonia-powered engines for four new ships as part of its decarbonization efforts. This announcement was made during the christening of its new flagship, the "Höegh Moonlight," scheduled for 2023.

The move by Hoegh Autoliners is not an isolated incident. According to DNV, a total of 39 ammonia-powered ships have been ordered, with commercial engines already available. This marks a significant stride towards early implementation of ammonia-fueled vessels. The first delivery phase is currently underway, with several ships ordered and prepared for operation.

The industry's interest in ammonia-fueled vessels is growing, with further orders anticipated as the industry gains experience with the carbon-free fuel. This trend is predicted by both Lloyd's Register and Grimaldi Group, which anticipate a surge in orders for these vessels.

One of the pioneers in this field is the Grimaldi Group, which recently received its first ammonia-ready vessel, the Grande Shanghai. This next-generation pure car and truck carrier vessel, commissioned by China Merchants Heavy Industries, can transport up to 9,000 CEU (car equivalent units). The Grande Shanghai is the first of ten such vessels commissioned by China Merchants Heavy Industries.

The first ammonia-fueled marine engines are scheduled for delivery in 2025, and the Grande Shanghai is equipped to handle these engines. However, there is still deep uncertainty about when zero- or near-zero emission fuels will be widely available and about the cost of these fuels.
