Ancient fortress of Orăștie in Western Romania welcomes visitors once more following extensive restoration projects

The medieval fortress of Oraștie, nestled in the picturesque Mureș Valley of Hunedoara County, western Romania, was reopened to the public on August 18, 2020. This historic structure, which has stood since the 1300s, has now become a significant part of the local tourist attractions.

The reopening event was marked with various activities, including historical reenactments, weapon handling demonstrations, and medieval theater. The fortress, which has served as a refuge during Tatar and Turkish invasions, was the centrepiece of these captivating displays.

The restoration of this architectural gem was a ten-year project initiated by the local administration, as stated by the mayor, Ovidiu Bălan. The total value of the project was RON 25.4 million (EUR 5 million), with EU funds amounting to RON 19.5 million. The architect responsible for the restoration was Károly Kós.

The fortress, a testament to the region's rich history, is an important part of the protected centre of the town, as mentioned by the mayor. The news agency Agerpres reported on the reopening of the fortress, while the mayor did not explicitly state that it was an important project for the local administration.

Access to the Oraștie Fortress is free for all visitors until August 24. The fortress was documented by German cartographer Sebastian Munster in 1544, adding to its historical significance. A photo of the fortress was shared on Facebook by Ovidiu Balan, providing a glimpse into this medieval marvel.

Visitors to the Oraștie Fortress can now step back in time, exploring the remnants of a bygone era and gaining a deeper understanding of the region's history.
