Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Naidu Introduces Seaweed-Shrimp Combination Approach for Sustainable Coastal Shrimp Farming

In a significant move towards sustainable and income-enhancing aquaculture, the Seaweed-Shrimp Integration Model was launched on August 23, 2025, in Andhra Pradesh. The project, a collaboration between ICAR-Central Institute of Brackishwater Aquaculture (ICAR-CIBA), the Society for Eradication of Rural Poverty (SERP), and the state government, was formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) under the Action Plan on Seaweed Cultivation Programme.

The MoU was signed by V. Karuna, IAS, CEO of SERP, and Dr. Kuldeep K. Lal, Director of ICAR-CIBA, in the presence of the Chief Minister, N. Chandrababu Naidu. Dr. Lal's research on Gracilaria species of seaweed cultivation in conjunction with shrimp farming has resulted in a 3-8 fold increase in seaweed biomass and improved shrimp growth.

The Seaweed-Shrimp Integration Model is cost-effective, environmentally sustainable, and enhances farmers' income without requiring extra investment. Particularly targeted towards women Self Help Groups (SHGs), the additional income from this model is expected to provide a significant boost to these communities.

The event marked the start of the implementation of the Seaweed-Shrimp Integration Model, with the programme being implemented with the support of 30 trained SHG women who are receiving technical assistance from ICAR-CIBA. During the launch, Naidu virtually interacted with these women farmers and they shared their positive experiences and new livelihood opportunities arising from seaweed farming.

Speaking at the launch, Naidu stated that the integration of seaweed with shrimp farming would revolutionize coastal aquaculture. He emphasized that this approach would improve water quality, enhance nutrient recycling, and generate additional income. The initiative is designed as a public-private partnership aiming to establish replicable, farmer-centric models of responsible aquaculture.

The Seaweed-Shrimp Integration Model supports Andhra Pradesh's Blue Economy vision. By promoting sustainable and income-generating practices, the project aligns with the state's commitment to economic growth while preserving its natural resources.

It is important to note that the Seaweed-Shrimp Integration Model appears to be a continuation of the collaboration between ICAR-CIBA, SERP, and the state government of Andhra Pradesh. However, it does not seem to be directly related to the Rs 640 Crore set aside by the Government of India for Seaweed Cultivation.

The launch of the Seaweed-Shrimp Integration Model is a testament to the potential of innovative, sustainable, and inclusive aquaculture practices. As the project progresses, it is expected to provide valuable insights and serve as a model for other regions seeking to improve their coastal aquaculture practices while empowering local communities.
