The Octavia Hill Garden Wins the Children's Choice Award at RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2024

The RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2024, the world's most famous horticultural event, has introduced a new award category this year: the Children's Choice Award. This innovative move aims to promote children's involvement and interest in gardening and horticulture.

One of the ways the Chelsea show is encouraging children's participation is through the RHS No Adults Allowed feature garden. Designed by pupils from Sulivan Primary School in collaboration with designer Harry Holding, this garden invites young minds to explore and imagine.

Another notable show garden is the RHS The Octavia Hill Garden, designed by Ann-Marie Powell in collaboration with Blue Diamond and the National Trust. This community garden, as Ann-Marie Powell mentioned, focuses on plants and nature to help children fall in love with them from a young age. The Octavia Hill Garden was chosen as the winner of the Children's Choice Award.

Nine London primary schools were invited to the RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2024 to judge the show gardens and pick a Children's Choice. Riley Garvey, age 11, from Christchurch Primary, chose the Octavia Hill Garden, stating that he liked the unexpected elements and the attention to detail in the planting.

Ann-Marie Powell, winner of the inaugural Children's Choice Award, expressed delight about children being more involved in the Chelsea show. She emphasized that the RHS The Octavia Hill Garden was designed with children in mind, but not in an obvious way. The garden is both a beautiful and functional space, with a focus on play and wildlife.

The Octavia Hill Garden is designed to encourage children to consider questions such as 'Is the garden a good place to play?' 'Is the garden attractive to wildlife?' and 'How does the garden make you feel?' when making their choices. This approach, according to Ann-Marie Powell, makes the garden a place where children can explore, learn, and connect with nature.

The RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2024 continues to introduce new features and award categories that cater to children's interests and involvement. Ann-Marie Powell's interview about the RHS The Octavia Hill Garden can be listened to on the Talking Gardens podcast on our website. Let's inspire the next generation of gardeners!
