Anticipated Alleviation for Drivers on a Troublesome Stretch of DC 295? Unveiling the Newest Developments

The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) has announced plans to improve safety and mobility on the section of I-295 and Pennsylvania Avenue, aiming to address long-standing traffic issues in the area. The project, which is currently in the study phase, includes reconstructing multiple highway structures, maintaining traffic flow during construction, and eventually expanding to six lanes. Major work is expected to be completed by fall 2025, with final touches by summer 2026.

However, nationwide research suggests that expanding highways does not necessarily lead to long-term congestion relief, as it can encourage more driving. In light of this, DDOT is focusing on improving public transit, walking, and biking as a way to address transportation problems in the 295 corridor.

The area where I-295 North and traffic from I-695 come together reduces from four lanes to two over a short distance as drivers approach the Pennsylvania Avenue exit. This section has been identified as a significant traffic chokepoint, and DDOT is studying ways to improve congestion in the area.

In 2012, DDOT opened a new bridge connecting I-695 and DC 295 North, aiming to address long-term traffic connectivity problems. While this connection solved one problem, it created a new one, as that part of 295 became one of the most reliably congested major roads in the DC area.

DDOT's moveDC plan aims to improve safety, mobility, and access through investments in public transit, biking, and walking. The study DDOT is conducting on the I-295 and Pennsylvania Avenue interchange also aims to connect the many neighborhoods that line 295, as the road can create a major barrier between them.

It's unclear when construction on improvements could begin, and DDOT has yet to decide exactly what the improvements should be. Drivers on I-295 North who don't want to exit on Pennsylvania Ave. are forced to merge left into what is often a very congested two lanes of traffic.

Traffic fatalities in DC are at a 12-year low, down 57% compared to this time last year, with serious injuries also down 8%. Despite this positive trend, the annual day known as "Terrible Traffic Tuesday" continues to be a challenge for commuters in the area.

DDOT has been asked about potential relief for the traffic chokepoint on I-295 near Pennsylvania Avenue, but no immediate relief is expected. The project's completion and the specific improvements are still under consideration.
