Flood and Heavy Rain Alert Issued Across Pakistan

Pakistan is bracing for heavy rain and floods in various parts of the country over the next few days, as per the latest weather forecasts.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has predicted heavy rainfall in Karachi from Sunday through Thursday, with a weather system forming over Sindh and India's Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan. This rainfall could lead to widespread thundershowers with heavy to very heavy falls in several districts in the province, including Tharparker, Umerkot, Mirpurkhas, Sanghar, Khairpur, Shaheed Benazirabad, Tando Allah Yar, Hyderabad, Badin, and Jamshoro from Saturday night till September 10. Widespread thundershower with moderate to heavy falls are also likely in Dadu, Larkana, Shikarpur, Kashmore, Sukkur, Jacobabad, and Ghotki districts from September 7 to 10.

The Flood Forecasting Division (FFD) of the PMD has warned that exceptionally high flood levels will continue in river Sutlej at Ganda Singh Wala. Similarly, the River Indus at Guddu Barrage is expected to attain very high flood level on September 7, and the River Indus at Guddu is anticipated to reach high flood levels from September 8 to 9. The River Chenab at Panjnad is also expected to attain high to very high flood level within the next 24-hours.

These flood conditions are expected to extend to the nullahs of DG Khan, Rajanpur, Kirthar Range, and East Balochistan from September 7 to 9, potentially leading to urban flooding in the major cities of the Sindh province during the same period.

The responsible authorities in Sindh, including the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and the Meteorological Department, have issued flood warnings and are coordinating response efforts. All concerned authorities have been advised to remain alert and take necessary measures to avoid any untoward situation.

The heavy rainfall may lead to urban flooding and water logging in low lying areas in Karachi and other parts of Sindh. The downpour may also damage weak structures like roofs, walls, electric poles, billboards, vehicles, and solar panels.

Chief Meteorologist Anjum Nazir Zaighum has advised farmers to manage their activities based on the weather forecast. He also warned that strong monsoon currents are expected to penetrate the eastern parts of the province from Saturday, potentially exacerbating the flood situation.

A weather advisory department has also issued a warning for potential urban flooding in Karachi due to heavy rain. The authorities have been urged to take immediate action to mitigate the impact of the upcoming floods and heavy rain.
