Antonelli arrives at Zandvoort on Friday, trapped in the gravel pit.
In the lead-up to the Zandvoort Grand Prix, the anticipation is high as teams and drivers gear up for an exciting race weekend. The weather forecast predicts a mix of cloudy and sunny conditions, with temperatures ranging between 22 and 34 degrees Celsius. However, there's also a high chance of rain for both Saturday and Sunday.
George Russell, driving for Mercedes, finished the second practice session in a respectable 4th place, behind both McLarens and Fernando Alonso. Despite this, he expressed that the gaps in the practice sessions were quite large, suggesting that he may not challenge McLaren during the race. Russell also mentioned that Aston Martin struggled initially but performed well in Hungary and seem fast in Zandvoort as well.
Kimi Antonelli, Russell's teammate, faced a setback in the first practice session when he spun and got stuck in turn eight, causing him to miss most of the session. However, in the second session, he was able to complete some laps, finishing in 12th place. Antonelli stated that if it stays dry, they will try to work on their issues. Interestingly, he was nearly a second behind his teammate in the second practice session.
Antonelli revealed that he found his rhythm a bit but there's still a lot of work to do. Ferrari, as a team, was missing something in the second practice session, but Russell believes they will sort it out quickly. Max Verstappen had a tough race in Hungary, but Russell thinks that was an exception.
The competition in Zandvoort seems to be shaping up between Aston Martin, Max Verstappen, Ferrari, and Russell. McLaren, too, appears to be a force to reckon with, given their strong performance in the practice sessions. However, the unpredictable weather conditions could throw a curveball into the mix.
Notably, George Russell collided with Oscar Piastri in the pit lane during the second practice session, resulting in a 5,000 euro fine for McLaren. Despite this incident, Russell remains focused on the race ahead.
As the teams prepare for qualifying and the main race, the tension is palpable. The Zandvoort Grand Prix promises to be an exhilarating event, with top-tier competitors battling it out on the track. Stay tuned for more updates as the action unfolds.
