Anwar calls for PNB to prioritize Bumiputera and national interests in the evaluation of Prolintas and other strategic assets
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has emphasized the importance of Permodalan Nasional Berhad (PNB) prioritizing national and Bumiputera interests in all decision-making, particularly in relation to its ongoing strategic review of its stake in Projek Lintasan Kota Holdings Sdn Bhd (Prolintas).
PNB, Malaysia's largest fund management company, established in 1978, manages various unit trust schemes, including the flagship Amanah Saham Bumiputera (ASB). With over 14 million unit holders, the fund's strategic reviews are part of its broader portfolio optimization efforts.
Prolintas, the concessionaire of several major highways in the Klang Valley, is considered one of PNB's key strategic infrastructure holdings. However, the Prime Minister warned that the review process should not proceed if it undermines long-term benefits for unitholders or negatively affects PNB's contribution to public welfare and national development.
Anwar also urged PNB to retain its role and stake in strategic national assets, and to consider national and Bumiputera interests as the main factor in making any decision. The current Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Deputy President of PNB is Datuk Rick Ramli.
It is unclear from the statement what specific negative effects on public welfare or national development the Prime Minister warned about. Neither was Prolintas explicitly mentioned as being a Bumiputera interest. However, the government has consistently emphasized that GLICs like PNB should safeguard national assets.
Anwar's statement was in response to PNB's ongoing strategic review of its stake in Prolintas. The review comes as part of PNB's efforts to optimize its portfolio and ensure it is aligned with the nation's long-term interests. The Prime Minister's emphasis on prioritizing national and Bumiputera interests underscores the importance of these strategic assets to the nation's development.
