Apartment building evacuation ordered by police due to impending collapse in Schöneberg neighborhood

On Thursday, 11th April, an apartment building in the Schoeneberg district of Berlin was evacuated due to a risk of collapse. The affected apartment block, located on Grunewaldstraße, has seen nine apartments being evacuated at short notice.

The evacuation was ordered by the police following a structural engineer's report. The building, which is considered to be at risk of collapse, has been under observation by Heimstaden Germany GmbH, the property company that owns it, since December 2023, due to visible cracks in its structure.

However, Heimstaden Germany GmbH has not provided any information regarding the extent or severity of the structural issues with the building. The city councilor, Eva Majewski (CDU), has expressed shock that the property company has apparently known about the problems for years.

Majewski stated that this is the first time she has heard about the known problems with the building. She shared her concerns about the situation during an RBB evening broadcast.

As a safety measure, part of Grunewaldstraße has been closed off between Hauptstraße and Goltzstraße. The city councilor has not yet announced any plans or measures to address the known structural issues with the building.

The Berliner Morgenpost reported the evacuation, but the exact cause of the structural problems remains unknown. It is currently unknown how long the evacuated apartments will be uninhabitable, according to a representative from Heimstaden.

Heimstaden Germany GmbH has acknowledged that structural problems with the building have been known for a long time, but the causes have not yet been clarified. The property company has assured that they will provide alternative accommodation for the evacuated families if they cannot stay with friends or family.

District Councillor Eva Majewski has called for immediate action to ensure the safety of the residents and the general public. The investigation into the cause of the structural issues continues, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
